Taylor echoed a similar sentiment as Revell in that she skipped some steps in the ladder to the top. She described that when she first entered corrections most of her colleagues had had careers in corrections. Specifically, Taylor recalled that one of her colleagues was a former Sheriff in Illinois and other senior management started their careers as correctional officers, enhanced their education along the way, and rose to the top. She noted, “There was a little apprehension at first, but I would say it dissipated, probably within a year or so.” That is, once Taylor was able to demonstrate her knowledge and showcase her abilities, any anxiety that her colleagues may have had regarding her limited background in corrections was eventually overlooked – but it took some time.

Page recalls the initial difficulties of being a probation officer and reconciling what her younger clients were doing and applying thoughts about their behavior to her daughter. Additionally, finding the balance between work and family was challenging. Page states:

One of the challenges, and my daughter will tell you, when I first started as a probation officer, I was real naïve to a lot of criminal activity with juveniles. So seeing some of the things that children that were the same age with my daughter was doing, I would go home and like, you know, jump on her and she’s like, ‘uh, mom, I didn’t do anything.’ And I said ‘well, just in case you thought about doing it,’ you know, so I just had a learning curve of adapting that they actually had 13- and 14-year-old kids out doing some of these adult crimes. So that was one of my biggest learning curves and challenges coming into the field. Some of the other things is getting called up in the middle of the night, if there’s a youth that needs our attention for whatever reason, if they’re in custody, you know having to leave your family in the middle of the night and going out to attend to someone else’s kid, basically that that’s what we were doing. So those are some of my challenges on the personal side.
